The PlaceEngine Client software for Windows platforms (XP/Vista/7) has been updated to version w100426. You can download this release from the installation page.

Major enhancements and fixes in this release:

  • Excessive CPU usage by the PlaceEngine Client has been fixed.
  • Problem where the PlaceEngine Client would sometimes wrongly display latitude and longitude has been fixed.
  • Proxy Server settings, which used to be global to the PlaceEngine Client, have now been made user-specific. As a result, Proxy Server settings have moved from the PlaceEngine Service configuration screen to the normal User Interface configuration screen.

Note: When upgrading from previous versions of PlaceEngine, only upgrades from w080703 onwards are supported. If upgrading from a version prior to that, please uninstall the previous version before installing the new version.

  • Problem where automatic startup setting was not being saved has been fixed.
  • Problem where Bluetooth GPS devices could not be configured has been fixed.
  • Selectable GPS device speeds have been updated. The full range of standard speeds from 300bps to 115200bps can now be selected.

In addition to basic OS X Snow Leopard support (Version 10.6.x), this version contains a roll-up of fixes from the previous Macintosh version.

PlaceEngine Client for Windows XP/Windows Vista/Windows 7 has been updated to version w091014. You can download this release from the installation page. This software is for use with Windows Vista or Windows 7 PCs with wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) hardware installed.

Major enhancements and fixes in this release:

  • Windows 7 support added.
  • Fixed problem where repeatedly installing and removing the Wi-Fi device caused the PlaceEngineService to terminate unexpectedly.
  • Fixed problem where operating PlaceEngine Client within an Ad-hoc network environment caused PlaceEngineService to terminate　unexpectedly.
  • Fixed problem where PlaceEngine Client would occasionally terminate unexpectedly when Windows was being shutdown.

PlaceEngine Client for Windows is released

PlaceEngine Client for Windows XP/Vista has been updated to version w081105. Please go to the installation page to download.

Main issues that have been fixed in this release:

  • Various installation and uninstallation issues.
  • Notification dialog doesn't pop up in the background.
  • Notification dialog steals the focus from the foreground application when it appears.
  • Notification dialog doesn't chime when when it appears, as instructed to by the client preferences.
  • Main window sometimes doesn't remember whether it's visible or hidden.

Note: If you are doing online location retrieval that uses the local database, please download the latest version of the local database by pressing the "Settings" button on the PlaceEngine Client (to open the settings window) and going to the "Local Database" tab.

PlaceEngine Client for Macintosh is released

PlaceEngine Client for Macintosh has been updated to version o080701. Please go to the installation page to download.

Main issues that have been fixed in this release:

  • Power PC versions of the Macintosh client couldn't access the local database.
  • When used continously for extended period of time the application would become sluggish.
  • If the network connection disappeared midway through a local database update then updating the database would become impossible.

  • WillComm W-ZERO3(WS003SH, WS004SH)
  • WillComm Advanced/W-ZERO3[es](WS011SH) (see Known Issues)
  • E-Mobile EM・ONE(S01SH) (see Known Issues)
  • Softbank X01HT
  • Softbank X01T
  • Softbank X02HT series handsets are currently not supported but will be supported in a future release.

Known issues regarding this release:

  • Web pages with PlaceEngine support will not function unless Opera for Windows Mobile is being used. For more information, please click here.
  • All handsets based on the Marvell 88W8686 (device name gspi8861) like the Willcom Advanced/W-ZERO3[es](WS011SH) and the E-Mobile EM・ONE(S01SH) exhibit the following problems with the on-board wireless LAN functionality:
    • Even though a wireless LAN signal is present, about 20% of the time PlaceEngine Client will erroneously display that the wireless LAN is off.
      Workaround: press the "Get Location" button again.
    • On web pages with PlaceEngine support, about 1% or 2% of the time the message "Retrieving Wi-Fi information..." is permamently displayed with nothing else happening.
      Workaround: restart PlaceEngine Client and reload the web page.

Main issues that have been fixed in this release:

  • In the General settings, the database path is now saved.
  • In the Logger settings, it is now possible to specify the COM port and port speed.
  • In the Local Database tab of the settings, it is now possible to update your local database.

Update versions for Windows (w070615) and Windows Mobile (m070618) have been released. Please refer to the install page to download the new versions.

  • Windows Mobile version now supports LocalDB functions (m070618)
  • For both Windows and Windows Mobile versions, a new error code is returned when an access point not found in the LocalDB is scanned.

New PlaceEngine Client Version

New versions of the PlaceEngine Client have been released: w070606 (For Windows), m070606 (For Windows Mobile), o070531 (For MacOS10.4). If you are using an older version please install the new versions.

  • Windows Vista is now supported.
  • Local DB function added: It's now possible to determine the latitude and longitude of your location even when you are not connected to the Internet by using the local database pre-installed on your device. Here is an example of how to use the Local DB: PlaceEngine/GoogleEarth Widget.
  • Macintosh OS10.4 is now officially supported (version o070531). It's missing the GPS and Local DB functions found in the Windows version.
  • In order to support the new Local DB function, the PlaceEngine Client now also records ESSID. Please see our updated Terms of Use and Privacy Policies.

  • Now accept both URL that end with '/' or not, as vailid URLs associated with API keys.
  • Fixed "Null Pointer Exception" errors that arise when a string other than a registered API key is used.

Get Location Permission Feature

You can configure which sites are allowed to access Wi-Fi information via your device.

Logging Feature

Now the PlaceEngine Client can log surrounding Wi-Fi signal patterns periodically and save them to a file. Log files can be uploaded to the PlaceEngine server and be converted to location information.

For the Willcom ZERO3 (Windows Mobile) there is an option to put the device into sleep mode to conserve battery lifetime Using this feature, you can carry your ZERO3 around everyday to log your movement/activity history.

GPS Logging Feature

You can attach a GPS device and log both Wi-Fi info and GPS location information at the same time (only for Windows).

Misc

We've done away with registering AP keys that were required in the previous versions of the client. Installation should be easier now.

PlaceEngine API

You can enable your web site with PlaceEngine and provide services based on current location.

PlaceEngine Log Conversion Tool

You can use this tool to convert PlaceEngine Client logs that only contain Wi-Fi information to location information. We support KML, PCX5, and other location information file formats.
